The tents, which are often used at festivals as campgrounds for visitors, turn into steam rooms during the summer months (which is a common time for festivals). Well, insulated tents become terribly uncomfortable in the summer in general.

The organizers of the Danish Skanderborg Music Festival, also known as SmukFest, came up with an interesting idea. The festival features various genres, including electronic music. In 2015, the festival’s headliners included Tiesto, Hardwell and Avicii.

So, the organizers built a campsite for overnight guests in the form of giant beer cans. Each can contains a double bed, table, chairs, fans, pillows, mirrors, shelves and even a miniature loft. The only thing missing is a mini-bar with real beer.

All visitors of the festival are obliged to accept such conditions, they simply have no other choice, because the main sponsor of the festival is the beer brand Royal Unibrew, but none of the visitors resent it, because such camping is quite convenient and very original.

Here, the crowd can sit on the grass and enjoy the beautiful surroundings while listening to music performed by some of the best Danish and international artists. When it started, it was only held for one day in the summer, but the event became so large that it was stretched over several days. This year’s festival will take place from August 8 to 12. What’s especially nice about the music festival is that it features a wide range of music genres: from rock, pop, heavy metal, hip-hop, folk, indie, blues, and electronica.

When it first took place in 1980, there were only seven bands and only about 600 visitors. In 1989, the music festival included performances by the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra for the first time and was well received by the crowd. Since then, it has become a tradition to close the festival with a classical performance. Today, Smukfest attracts crowds of around 40-45,000 people with a crew of around 8,500 employees.

This year’s headliners include international acts such as Bryan Adams, Backstreet Boys, Fallulah, Uriah Heep, BLUR, The Blues Overdrive, The Corrs and many more. Among the well-known Danish performers are Malk de Koijn, Stand Up for Skanderborg, A Friend in London, Alphabeat and Boho Dancer. The organizers of Sensation festival were brothers Miles and Duncan Statterheim, who were famous for their small but creative parties in the clubs of Amsterdam, Netherlands. One of the parties was declared a white party, as you can guess, everyone who wanted to attend had to come completely in white. The party was very successful and soon rumors about it spread all over the Netherlands.

In 2000 Myles died in a car accident. He was seen off on his last journey by the whole city. Interesting and the fact that at the funeral everyone was also dressed in white. His brother Duncan decided to honor his brother’s memory and the next year he organized a Sensation festival. He asked all guests to come dressed in white, and 80 percent of the 40,000 guests responded to his request. Since then, the tradition of coming to Sensation parties in white has continued.

In the early days of the festival there was only one Sensation, but it soon split into two variants – Sensation White and Sensation Black. Sensation White focused on trance and house, while Black played heavier music – hardcore techno, hardstyle.

The division between Sensation White and Sensation Black is not only in the music that is played. Guests are only required to come in white or black. Over the course of the two different parties, Sensation White has been renamed simply Sensation and Sensation Black has become simply Black. Furthermore, Black moved permanently to Belgium.

Until 2005 Sensation was held only in the Netherlands, but then the festival started to come to other countries as well. Every year the list of countries changes, the parties only in the Netherlands, in Amsterdam, remain unchanged.

Over the years Sensation parties have been played by such DJs as Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, David Guetta, Paul van Dyk and others. And Black has been visited by such celebrities as Showtek, Headhunterz, DJ Lady Dana, The Prophet, Technoboy, Tommyknocker, Yoji Biomehanika and Mauro Picotto.

NorthSide Festival was established in 2010 by Danish promoter Brian Nielsen together with German concert agency FKP Scorpio. This variant of the name (with a capital letter in the middle of the word) was chosen to avoid confusion with another famous music festival – Northside Festival in Brooklyn, New York.

The first festival was a one-day event featuring performances by five Danish rock bands – Nephew, Turboweekend, Mew, Selvmord and Veto. A year later, NorthSide Festival was extended to two days, and the invited musicians included guests from abroad – Suede, White Lies, Elbow, Interpol, Band of Horses. In 2013, the festival became a three-day event, and all 25,000 tickets sold out two weeks before the event.

NorthSide Festival is a multi-genre festival, with rock, alternative rock, pop, synthpop, hip-hop, indie, and electronic music on the program. Over the years the festival has hosted such stars of the world stage as Snow Patrol, Kasabian, Garbage, Arctic Monkeys, Gogol Bordello, Tegan and Sara, Franz Ferdidand, Lana Del Rey, FKA Twigs, The Chemical Brothers, Duran Duran, Iggy Pop, Sigur Ros, Yelawolf and others.

Since 1972, the festival has been organized and run by the Roskilde Festival Charity Society, a non-profit organization focused on the development and support of music, culture and humanism.

The Roskilde Festival program features a variety of musical genres – alternative rock, psychedelic rock, punk rock, heavy metal, pop, synth-pop, reggae, hip-hop, indie, folk and ethno, electronic music and others. The organizers try to invite both world-famous artists and aspiring musicians, for whom the festival helps to make a name for themselves.

Until the mid-1990s, the Roskilde Festival was attended mainly by Scandinavians, but now it is also popular with tourists from other European countries – Germany, Great Britain and others. In 2013 more than 180 bands and performers performed at the festival, and the number of visitors exceeded 130 thousand. If we add to this number 3 thousand musicians, 5 thousand media representatives and 21 thousand volunteers, it turns out that the festival is annually visited by more than 160 thousand people.

Usually the festival in Roskill takes place at the end of June – beginning of July. The festival grounds (covering an area of about 80 hectares) open a few days before the official start of the festival. These days are called “warm-up days” and are filled with impromptu concerts and parties. During the festival, concerts take place on several stages with capacities ranging from a thousand to 60,000 spectators. Traditionally, it opens with a concert of a Scandinavian band on the Big (Orange) stage.

Since 1999, the Radio Festival in Roskilde has been organizing “nude races” around the festival town. The two winners of the race (male and female) get free tickets to the next festival. In recent years, the race has become so popular that there is even a qualifier for male participants.

In June 1974, a group of young music lovers organized a small three-day festival of folk music, ballads and beer in an old mill on the banks of the Vida River to celebrate the day of the summer solstice. The event proved to be a success and the boys held another festival in September. Interestingly, both times the speakers included Scotsman Rob Sinclair, who later became one of the regular organizers.

The first official folk music festival in Tonnerre was held in August 1975. The end of August was chosen for several reasons. First, there were other folk festivals taking place in Denmark at the time: in June in Skagen, and in July in Roskill. The festival in Tønner did not overlap with any of them and closed the summer festival calendar. Secondly, there is a fairly high probability of good weather in Denmark in August. The musical program of the debut festival was quite eclectic, ranging from a military band to psychedelic rock bands.

Over the years, the Tønner Festival has become one of the most important festivals of traditional and contemporary folk music not only in Denmark, but also in the whole of Europe. The festival features musicians from Scandinavia, Ireland, Scotland, England, the Netherlands, Canada, the USA and other countries. The genres represented in its program range from Irish and Scottish folk to Scandinavian and Baltic folk music.

Concerts are usually held in 9-10 venues within the city and in large tents directly in the festival area. Most concerts are seated, but some have both seating and standing room. Initially it was not possible to buy a single ticket for all concerts because the venues varied in capacity, but in recent years the festival did switch to a wristband pass system standard for many music festivals.
